The Data Center Mandate: Consolidate We Must
By Gary A. Bolles, Co-founder and Editorial Director
With Shel Israel, Editor-in-Chief
Conferenza Newsletter, October 11, 2004
Encentuate of Foster City, CA uses agents to resolve identity
and access management to secure the increasing number of access
points in an enterprise system. Peng. T. Ong, founder and CEO, previously
was founder and chairman of Interwoven, co-founder of Match.com
and Electric Classifieds. In a conversation we found him knowledgeable
and impressive. Peng told investors that users having to access
all sorts of apps and ASPs' Web sites create vulnerabilities: "You
end up with lots of access points," he said. Encentuate's solution
is to create an agent layer between client and server that deals
with the the increasing complexity, which far surpasses Passport's
capacity. The agent keeps track of users IDs and manages authentication,
not just for enterprise PCs, but for mobile devices as well. The
agent cost, he said, averages about $80 per user. We liked Encentuate's
focus on data centers burdened by HIPAA compliance issues. They
claim 20 customers in the health care and services industry including
Affymetrix, CMC Hospital and Northwest Hospital Customers.

Lessons from Google
San Jose, CA, Mercury News, August 21, 2004
"At Foster City start-up Encentuate, CEO Peng Ong says he's
learning from Google, even after launching two other companies,
Interwoven and Match.com. His company sells software to help companies
integrate their computer systems, and Ong says he focuses on making
money the traditional way—off every piece of software he makes.
But Google has taught him the value of developing useful products
for customers, even if there's no immediate way to make money
from it."
Peng is one of three Silicon Valley entrepreneurs interviewed on
what the Google IPO means for business and new tech companies.
